The Receipt Desk
The Check
Miami runs on checks that make your eyes water — the $38 water, the mandatory 28% “service charge” on top of the tip, the valet fee for a parking lot you can see from your table. Readers send us the worst of them. Our desk verifies every line against the business's own published menu prices, redacts everything personal, and crowns one winner a day.
No crowned check yet — that's not an empty page, that's an open invitation. The first winner publishes the day a reader's receipt clears verification: our desk checks the line items against the business's published menu, redacts card digits, names, and server details, and an editor crowns it. Nothing runs off a screenshot alone, and the original photo never publishes — only the redacted copy does.
How The Check Works
| You send it | A photo of the receipt, the business, the neighborhood, and the line that made your jaw drop — via Send Us THE CHECK. Your contact stays private; you're credited by first name or pseudonym only. |
| We verify it | The desk cross-checks the receipt against the business's actual published menu prices and records where those prices were seen. A check that can't be cross-checked doesn't get crowned — a screenshot is a tip, not a story. |
| We redact it | Before anything publishes, the desk prepares a redacted copy: card numbers and digits, full names, server names and IDs, and order codes that identify a person are covered. The original photo is never published. Redaction is a signed desk attestation — enforced in our publishing system. |
| They respond | A receipt is one party’s document from one visit. Prices shown were cross-checked by our desk against the business’s published menu on the date noted. The business was invited to respond; any response is published with the story. |
